For open world I'd recommend Elder Scrolls Online and for instanced content PvE I'd go with FF XIV. I have no idea if there are still any good PVP mmorpgs out there, I used to play LineAge and Aion but that was a long time ago, I have no idea if they're still alive or what state they're in.

Guild Wars 2 is also good, but its horizontal progression may throw some people off.
