Wave control is the foundation of every decision you make as a support, even though you don't farm. It affects your roaming, trading, recalling, and more. While your ADC has direct control over the wave, understanding their goals and assisting them can give you a significant advantage. Most support players ignore this crucial skill, so by mastering wave control, you'll gain an edge over your opponents.
Roaming is often touted as the key to carrying games as a support. But how do you roam effectively without your ADC dying? Let's compare roaming to driving a car. Just as accidents are unavoidable when driving, your ADC's death during a roam cannot be prevented entirely. However, the benefits of roaming outweigh the risks.
Once you unlock your support item and gain three wards, your main goal is to establish effective vision. Don't limit your wards to the bot lane only; find opportunities to move towards the mid lane and place wards there. Mid lane has high traffic from supports and junglers, and it encourages your mid laner to roam and prevents enemy roams. Placing one to two wards in mid and around the objective areas will greatly benefit your team.
When you're winning lane, taking dragons becomes a natural consequence. Focus on dominating your lane, and the dragons will come naturally, denying the enemy team the opportunity to secure them. As a support, being in the mid lane grants you access to both objectives, allowing you to ward effectively and respond quickly to skirmishes and fights.
If you have a teammate who is significantly ahead, don't just cling to them and neglect other responsibilities. Instead, practice "shadowing." Stay near them but not right next to them, providing crucial information to counter enemy attacks and turn fights in your favor. Avoid being predictable by babysitting your teammate throughout the game.
As a support, you'll find yourself around the mid lane most of the time. This positioning enables you to maintain optimal vision and respond to the various fights that occur in solo queue. While your ADC may push a side lane, trust them to farm while you focus on controlling the mid area, where most objectives and skirmishes take place.
To gain an advantage and anticipate enemy plays, venture deeper into the enemy territory to place wards strategically. Deep wards allow you to see enemy movements before they commit to a play, empowering you to avoid or counter their actions. Pay close attention to the map and seize opportunities to place deep wards when the enemy team is revealed.
