I think I can actually answer better if some more specific examples are given.
Often I observed that the main reason for these criticisms and attacks was due to the self-confidence problems of the critic. These people tend to talk about the mistakes and imperfections of unrelated people in order to miss their focus from their own shortcomings.

I think some people just like criticizing period. It is embedded on their DNA or something. While critiquing is not always bad, baseless criticism is where I draw the line.
