Should prison be a place for non-violent criminals?

I don't know how it is in the U.S, but here in Morocco people who do crime that aren't violent and don't hurt any specific person, mentally or physically, can still go to prison. I've always found it odd.

What do you think? Should people who have committed something along the lines of some severe economical crime be put in prison?

Personally, I don't think so. They should be penalized, but I always found it weird that they are put together with prisoners who did actual violent stuff.
Now, we do have a three-tier system of prisons in Morocco, so someone who embezzled a lot of money out of a company isn't gonna get put together with paedophiles and murderers, but I still find it odd that they get put together with people who maybe committed non-armed robbery or minor assault, violent criminals who get put in the lowest-tier prison.

Prison is meant to keep people who are a danger to society out, and rehabilitate them to become better citizens. I think it's much better to have someone, who stole like a million dollars out of a company, in home arrest with an ankle monitor. He's no threat to society. His life is already ruined and he won't ever have that kind of access to that kind of money ever again as nobody will hire him to such a position.

It makes sense that even good people go to jail (for certain periods of time). Breaking a law is bad ( even though we break almost everyday [online] using piracy to watch films, shows and play games but its not the same thing as riding to the wrong side of the road.). Breaking Laws In Real Life is worst.

Any criminal should learn that there are consequences for their actions.

Although, the penalty should be relevant to the crime committed.

I think in some cases non violent offences can be just as bad as a violent offense. It just depends on the actual crime. But in most cases no i dont think that a person should be incarserated for non violent offenses. Unless it has been done multiple times. The big part is that people with money can pay there way out of trouble and poor people have to serve long prison sentences. This is a way for countries to get free labor on jobs that most people dont want to do.

yes this is the idea you cant put someone who like embezzled a lot of money out of a company with violent criminals

those who steal economically are also criminals and deserve jail.

Millions of people die because of economic corruption. They are murderers like those who kill by weapons.

Not counting people who live on the edge of poverty because of that. Corrupt people don't deserve to be punished with anklets, but jail.

Myself i would be for the same that the people who have committed an economic crime are housed together but that with the prison it must be a deterrent to do it again
