Here are the basic rules of chess:
- The chessboard consists of 64 squares of alternating colors.
- Each player starts with 16 pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns.
- The goal of the game is to checkmate the opponent's king, which means to put the king in a position where it is under attack and cannot escape capture.
- The pawns move forward one square at a time, but capture diagonally.
- The rooks move horizontally or vertically.
- The knights move in an L-shape (two squares in one direction and then one square in a perpendicular direction).
- The bishops move diagonally.
- The queen can move in any direction (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally).
- The king can move in any direction, but only one square at a time.
- A player can "castle" by moving the king two squares towards a rook on the player's first rank, then moving the rook to the square the king crossed.
