The chess board is laid out as below:
- The rook moves horizontally or vertically, the bishop diagonally, the queen in any direction along the rank, file, or diagonal, the knight moves to any of the squares immediately adjacent to it, then makes a 90-degree turn and moves to an adjacent square on that line, the king moves to any adjacent square in any direction, and the pawn moves forward one square, but captures diagonally.
- The game begins with the white player moving first, after that players take turns moving one piece at a time (with the exception of castling, when the king and rook move at the same time).
- A pawn has the special ability to move two squares on its first move, and the option to capture an opponent's piece diagonally in the next move.
- A pawn also has the option to promote to a queen, rook, bishop, or knight, if it reaches the opponent's end of the board.
- A player wins the game by placing the opponent's king in "checkmate", which means the king is in a position to be captured (in "check") and there is no way to move the king out of capture (mate).
- A game can also end in a "stalemate" if neither player can make a legal move,
