Harry Potter definitely had a bigger impact on me as a kid/adolescent but, if I had to (gun to my head situation, although I don't know why that would happen) pick, I'd pick LotR. The sheer amount of work and detail put into that universe is stunning. Tolkien truly created another world and, if it isn't evident in just LotR alone, it's definitely clear in The Silmarillion. I'd also have to say that I agree with calros_danger_jr's comment that LotR is much more relatable as you get older and, as I'm no longer a kid/teen anymore, I find it more relatable than HP. But don't get me wrong, HP will always hold a special place in my heart. That series defined, or at least helped define, most of my childhood.
