Gold is probably the most useless item in the game for anything that has a durability.
Gold Armour
Diamond Armour
A full set of diamond armour will give you 20 defence points, whereas gold will only give you 11.
Diamond armour also has the attribute ‘toughness’ which will nullify a portion of a stronger attack. Gold armour does not have this.
Diamond is much more durable than gold, with gold barely better than leather armour.
But
Golden armour is much more enchantable than any other armour, coming in with a score of 25, over diamonds 10.
So overall, gold armour is really a waste of resources unless you are trying to get high level/rare enchantments that would take a long time and a lot of resources to get the same enchantment on a diamond piece. The same goes for any gold tool.
Personally, I would just stick with diamond and just keep at the enchanting process until you get what you want, with the added bonus of ending up with a fair bit of diamond armour you can specialise for certain environments, like the nether or for clearing out ocean monuments. Gold is better used for clocks, powered rails, and to make ingredients for brewing.
