Honestly, I don't think they abandon the game. It's too lucrative to pass up. They are probably doing this because the opening for invasion may have arisen from the skins and therefore it was better to disable it. Everything will be fine

This happened before...in early years of the game. Happened during competition online was in course. They will handle it for sure, nothing they cant fix

I think this is not the first time this has happened, and because of the size of the company they are probably prepared to deal with this kind of thing or not, you never know, but I think nothing will happen but a delay in updates.
