It depends largely. Do you prefer turn-based strategy games (ex: final fantasy tatics)? Or do you prefer free action (eg world of wacraft)?
I still think WoW is one of the best free action RPG's. Elder Scrolls is also good. If you prefer the turn based ones, final fantasy tatics is pretty good (although not online). I believe that the story itself is what will define your choice.
