Simple…it it is placed right in the very heart of Europe between east and west. Historically, this country was destined either for greatness or misery. It went through all of it. And now it is sort of in the middle of the European map as well as middle of European economics. Not great, but not bad at all.
Because the geographical location, this country for some reason avoided major conquest from other famous empires. Roman empires never really conquered it, also the Russian empire never conquered it. Same goes for the Turk/Byzantine empires. Additionally, Poland avoided Mongolian conquest.None of these empires have had any influence on the country. And to add to it, we fought numerous wars against all of them.
Normally when you travel to Europe, you will see that Western Europe share a lot of history together. West was primarily a roman empire and later HRE. South of Europe was also Roman and later Byzantine empire. East Europe was pretty much dictated by Russian empire and Mongolians since there was no other significant player to compete for the far east territories.
Poland, never had a chance to be ruled by any empire even though the empires tried to influence to some degree our politics. Unfortunately, this sometimes worked against Poland. At some point Poland was split between three empires surrounding Poland, because Poland started to grow in power too quick and it would eventually grow bigger than the rest of empires. The other empires Prussia(HRE), Russia, And AHE, did not want to take chances of becoming smaller, and ganged up on Poland from three sides at the same time. This resulted in Poland’s partition for the next 120 years…and next it was WW1 and WW2, and communism. Basically, Poland lost its rights for almost 200 years. Yet, she lost nothing from the culture and language. She stands strong today like nothing ever happened. You could say, it is quite a resistant country, which did not receive any major help from outsiders.
When you go to Poland now, it is clearly visible the country preserved its culture and history to the very core. There is No Roman/HRE/Russian culture at all. So when you go to Poland. you will find a country that invented itself and develop itself how it wanted to be, not how others wanted it to be. Possibly, it is the only country in Europe like this with no major influences from other famous empires. Of course, we borrowed a lot and learned a lot from our neighbors. You will find lots German/Russian influences, but they are minor cosmetic ones. We are still today very homogeneous society, which is good and bad, depending on which side of the spectrum you are looking from.
In other words, Poland represent the very history or Europe. We are Europe. When West was fighting East Europe, Poland could not hide. We were the battle ground. French and Spanish could hide from war, Poland was paying for all of it every single time. When the time came to end WW2, French and England, gave Poland to Russia in order to keep Stalin happy. We were used as a bargaining chip, despite our protests, in order to save west Europe.

We feel deeply patriotic and connected to the country, even though we might complain about it a lot. Once we leave our country we feel immediately disconnected as if we left our close family forever
