To stop Windows updates from automatically downloading and installing on your system, you can use several methods, but keep in mind that it's generally recommended to keep your system up to date for security and stability reasons. However, if you need to temporarily disable automatic updates for specific reasons, here are some options:
1. **Pause Updates (Windows 10)**:
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Click on "Advanced options."
- Under the "Pause updates" section, toggle the switch to turn on "Pause until" and select a date up to 35 days in the future.
- This will temporarily pause updates on your system.
2. **Metered Connection (Windows 10)**:
- Set your internet connection as metered. Windows will then not download updates automatically over this connection.
- Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Wi-Fi or Ethernet (depending on your connection type).
- Click on your connected network.
- Toggle the switch under "Set as metered connection" to turn it on.
3. **Group Policy (Windows 10 Pro, Enterprise, and Education)**:
- Open the Group Policy Editor by typing "gpedit.msc" in the Run dialog (Win + R) and pressing Enter.
- Navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update.
- Double-click on "Configure Automatic Updates" and select "Disabled."
- Click "Apply" and then "OK."
4. **Registry Editor**:
- Open the Registry Editor by typing "regedit" in the Run dialog (Win + R) and pressing Enter.
- Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU.
- Create a new DWORD value named "NoAutoUpdate" and set its value to 1.
- Restart your computer for the changes to take effect.
Remember to enable automatic updates again once you've addressed the reason for disabling them, as keeping your system up to date is important for security and performance.
Go to Settings by pressing Windows key + I.
Click on "Update & Security".
In the Windows Update tab, click on "Advanced options".
Under the "Pause updates" section, you can select a date up to 35 days in the future to pause updates. This will prevent Windows from automatically installing updates during the selected period.
