If you live in a house, dog is better because it will patrol and secure your house. For apartment, I recommend cats. They are careful with high places, and enjoy being alone sleeping. Dogs doesn't fit well in apartments cause when they alone, they woof too much

The cat is better than the dog (my opinion) because cats can see well in the night and can help you, if you can't find what you are looking for, the cat will jump onto it (sometimes) if you really can't find it and its small too so you can sleep with it and lovable like a dog
