I get your question, however i have a slightly different view when comparing between dogs and cats. There is not a "better" pet per say when comparing both pets. Both pets are unique and different on many scales. It is completely dependent on what amount of responsibility you can handle. Cats are independent, relatively speaking, they don't need to be looked after as much as dogs, they don't need the attention of what are they eating/chewing on, they don't need to go out for walks, they can go years without showers, unlike dogs. This may sound like i am biased towards cats, but actually this is all true about cats.
On the other hand, cats wont give you the companionship the dog offers, cats wont give you loyalty, in some situations dogs can provide security, love goes both ways for cats and dogs, with cats its different, it feels like they love you according to their rules, but dogs love you according to your human rules.
They are completely different from each other, each is unique!
In my opinion cat is better

i was owned two of them and dog was so bad dogs are smeel disgusting they making their shit and pee on the house and they always want go outside but cats are not like that currently i have a cat and he is my best friend he didnt shit on house dont pee on bed he making all of them on the sand and they not smell disgusting they can clear them selfs

Cats are more independents, they can be assholes because that. But they are lovely, i prefer cats.

if you have the opportunity (garden or a place where the dog can play comfortably), the dog is a better choice. If you're working and don't show much interest, the cat can have fun on its own.

when I was younger I preferred cats because they were cute, today I prefer dogs
